DO YOU KNOW...
"...An OTDR is the best device to use for measuring splice loss, with the true loss being the average of bidirectional measurements. Undirectional measurements can be misleading, sometimes showing a gain in power (“gainers”) or exaggerated loss. This is due to natural variations in MFD between spliced fibers and the way the OTDR measures the backscattered light at these joints..."

Interview: How Training Came In Handy

Telebarbados Logo

TeleBarbados, a leading telecommunication provider in Barbados, West Indies, has recently sent three of its employees, Terry Power, Richard Clark and Edward Millington (pictured below) to attend our four day Certified Fiber Installer and Master Installer courses.

Telebarbados Logo

The OSP Coordinator, Terry Power, was kind enough to interview with us to share his training experience with you. The following interview covers why he sought training and how he utilized his newly acquired knowledge and skills once back in the field. He concludes it was a tremendous benefit for him and his crew.

"The overall experience of dealing with the training and sales staff at FiberOptic.com has been amazing. The flexibility, information, and support we receive make my job so much easier – freeing me up to focus on planning and managing our outside plant assets. I am very happy to have met and discovered Fiber training at FiberOptic.com"

- Terry E. Power
TeleBarbados
St. Michael, Barbados, W.I.

Why Terry Sought Training

Julie: What is your current position and title?
Terry: Outside Plant Coordinator

Julie: What developments in your telecommunications career brought about the need for FiberOptic.com training?
Terry: I used the course as a refresher of existing knowledge acquired through several years in the communication industry. As a leader, however, I was truly pleased with the training our technician and engineer received. The training they received has already made my life easier by having the team with the knowledge base to accomplish our goals. We are a much stronger team because of our experience with the Fiber School.

Julie: What skills were you expecting to receive from your training?
Terry: As stated above, I was expecting a refresher. I also learned some new skills in testing and troubleshooting techniques. Suggestions on record-keeping have already been implemented here for the inevitable time when we need good records to identify and correct fiber breakage.

Julie: Did FiberOptic.com training meet your expectations and how?
Terry: The training experience far exceeded my expectations. The flexibility of the staff to accommodate our specific training and equipment needs meant that we had hands-on experience with the equipment we use at home. We were also treated to a vendor demonstration of an enclosure that I am considering specifying for our system here.

The flexible nature of the facility and the staff allowed these things to happen; making our experience truly geared to our individual system needs.

Julie: Now that you are back in the field, what acquired skills from FiberOPtic.com training have you been utilizing the most?
Terry: Specifically, we have started using OTDR advances and record-keeping suggestions to create the documentation needed for the “when it happens” type situations.

Julie: What is unique about the geographic region in which you live and its relationship with fiber optic technology? (For example, the importance of having strong fiber optic knowledge and skills so you can quickly respond to things such as hurricane damage)
Terry: Here in Barbados, we live with the constant consideration to the weather. Major hurricanes have missed us for over fifty years, which sometimes makes people complacent. Having worked in the cleanup after all four storms that hit Florida in 2004, I am very conscious of what a hurricane can do to communications plant.

We also have a lot of plant that is buried in conduit that is at or below the water table. Many manholes are flooded most times and must be pumped to do any work. This also provides a hostile environment for splice enclosures. Only the highest quality enclosure will survive here. And proper experience and training of personnel to stress good practices is vital to protecting the integrity of the plant.

Worst case thinking is not a “gloom and doom” type of thing. In the part of the world, it is an exercise in mitigating the possible threats to the plant and planning ahead the best and fastest way to restore service to our customers and clients. Let’s face it, in any system, it isn’t a matter of “if, but when” the damage to the plant will occur. Threats of storms and flooding are just the particulars here.

How Terry's Training Came In Handy

"On Friday afternoon, 7 December 2007, we had a major backbone fiber cut by a construction auger on the highway here. Richard, Edward, and myself responded to the cut. The training we received from FiberOptic was instrumental in limited the time needed to restore the vital circuits in our system.

The following Monday morning, 10 December 2007, a large truck pulled down another section of fiber. We used ideas discussed in the Master Fiber Optic Technician course to make the troubleshooting more efficient. By using baseline traces on an OTDR and comparing them to traces shot that morning; we were able to determine the area of the break and drive straight to the location. After the needed aerial construction to re-route the fiber, we were able to complete the splicing in only three hours. More time was needed for the cleanup, but the light paths were restored in three hours.

We attribute the speed of these restorations to a combination of the training we received with you, a healthy dose of worst-case planning, and the unfortunate practice we received on Friday night.

In all cases, however, we are thrilled with the benefits to TeleBarbados that fiber training at FiberOptic.com has provided."
